Rebooting Over the Weekend for Better Productivity
“All work and no play make Jack a dull boy”. What better way to start this article than with this well-known adage. Working is good, working is great, working is amazing. It is one of the ways to show progress in life, but we often forget that we are human, and our bodies need to rest.
Rebooting over the weekend is all about recharging and doing things that rejuvenate your mind, whilst also setting yourself up for success for an overall improved productivity and body.
To make this more relatable we will be giving an example with a common home appliance that is a staple in every Nigerian home – the blending machine, otherwise also known as “blender”. If we recall, whenever we try to use this machine, we run it for a short while and then we turn it off. Why? So that we do not overwork it and end up with a faulty blender. But unfortunately, we do not seem to give that sort of attention to our bodies.
We know how important rebooting is. We can certainly all agree that a renewed mind has the potential to deliver better productivity. Which is why we will be sharing with you some fun and budget-friendly ways to reboot over the weekend, to improve your productivity for the new week.
Get Organised in Style: Organising can sometimes be a chore, but we can make it fun. Put on your favorite choice of music, pour a drink, and turn it into a game to see how quickly you can clear out the personal spaces. Challenge yourself to do things slightly differently but better each time. De-cluttering is another way to reboot. Clearing your space and thrifting or thrashing out anything you do not find useful or have not used in a while is a very therapeutic exercise and can further refresh your space and lighten your mood to positively enhance your mood.
Prepare Meals for the Week: Meal preparation is a time-saver. It not only saves time but gives you the opportunity to decide your health status, try out new recipes, research on food and take charge of what you consume because as we all know health is wealth.
Socialise or Engage with Others: Engaging with others (friends and family) is a great way to have fun whilst keeping up with events among people you are comfortable with. Plan a social night with friends or family. Do it differently each time. For example, you could suggest that everyone unplugs from their phones. Play board games, cook a big dinner together or even do a puzzle. Basically, unplug from your 9 – 5 routine and reconnect with people outside of your workplace.
Self-Care Ritual: Treat yourself to a spa day at home – think face masks, baths, aromatherapy or even gentle yoga. Book a massage or a facial if you want to go all out. This can be equally fun either as a solo or group activity.
Digital Detox/ Creative Day: Take a break from screens and social media for a day (or even a few hours). Use this time to be present with yourself. Do something creative. Whether it is painting, writing, crafting, hiking, checking out a museum or trying out a new recipe, as earlier mentioned with the people around you. Thankfully, there are so many recreational activities to do such as paint n sip, candle making, going to movies, reading, journaling, evening strolls, etc. Sometimes the smallest change of scenery can be invigorating.
Mindful Movement: Try a fun and low-pressure workout, take a dance class, start yoga, or go for a long walk to clear your mind and be inspired by your environment – something to get your body moving without it feeling like a chore.
Community Involvement: Find groups people with similar values or interests – religious groups, charitable causes, jogging or cycling groups. Schedule periodical activities with them and try to do these activities differently each time around.
Sleep and Rest: This is essential and the most important of all. Your body has been active for the whole week. The weekend is the perfect time to sleep, relax and rest your body. It’s basically a state of putting your mind to rest, not thinking about much or worrying about next week’s task. It is a perfect way to rejuvenate. Prioritise this and be intentional about putting away some time for your rest.
There are more ways to reboot over the weekend of which you can research from other online and offline resources. But with these few tips from your buddies at ReTrain. We are sure there is something for everyone here.
PS: If you have really lost the drive to set yourself up for a good week over the weekend, try saying these affirmations to yourself in the mirror:
- “When I put myself first, everything around me benefits”.
- “Everything I do today leads to a better tomorrow”.
- “I deserve to show up for myself”.
We will see you in the next blog!
